Using Library Spaces

Policies & Guidelines

The Leslie Hardinge Library is designed to support the academic and research needs of AIIAS graduate students in a quiet and conducive study environment. To ensure the library remains a welcoming and productive space, users are encouraged to follow these policies:

Open Shelving

  • The library employs an open shelving system, allowing users to browse materials at their leisure.
  • Books should not be re-shelved by users; instead, place them on the designated trolleys for proper handling by library staff.

Quiet Environment

  • The library is primarily a quiet study area. Talking should be minimized and kept to subdued tones.
  • Group study tables are available for collaborative work and discussions in the IMRC Section.
  • Disruptive behavior may result in users being asked to leave to preserve the library’s quiet atmosphere.

Protection of Library Materials

  • Theft, mutilation, or defacing of materials or equipment, including folding pages, marking with pens, pencils, or highlighters, is strictly prohibited. Violators will face disciplinary actions and penalties as determined by the library staff or committee.

Computer Use

  • Public access computers are intended for research purposes only and must comply with AIIAS Information Technology Policies.
  • Personal computers may connect to the Internet but are subject to the same rules.
  • Non-research activities, including personal business or illegal/immoral activities, are prohibited on library computer equipment.
  • The library reserves the right to monitor computer usage routinely. Policy violations may result in the suspension of library privileges and disciplinary action.

Study Areas

  • The library offers tables and carrels in the reading rooms for quiet study.
  • Study cubicles may be rented each semester for advanced research projects. To apply or renew a cubicle, consult a librarian.
    • Only properly checked-out library materials may be stored in cubicles.
    • Cubicles should be kept clean and organized. Librarians may inspect cubicles for library materials and cleanliness.
  • Personal items left in cubicles are the user’s responsibility; the library is not liable for any loss or damage.
